Michael Phelps to be flag bearer at Rio opening ceremony: RIO DE JANEIRO — Michael Phelps has been selected as the United States’ flag bearer in his fifth, and final, Olympics.
The legendary swimmer was selected by a vote of U.S. athletes.
Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time with 22 medals, is the second swimmer to serve as flag bearer after Gary Hall did so in Montreal in 1976. Opening ceremonies are on Friday.
“For me to be able to have the opportunity to carry the flag for the United States in the Opening Ceremonies: dream come true,' Phelps said in a news conference Wednesday. 'To lead our country into this Olympics is something that I honestly never thought I’d have an opportunity to do. When one of our staff members told me last night that I was selected, I think I had the biggest smile on my face you could possibly find. A little bit of emotion came over me.
